Abstract (English): ABSTRACT of the dissertation submitted by Aida Yerkenovna Aubakirova for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the educational program “8D01717 – Kazakh Language and Literature” entitled “New Terms in the Kazakh Language: Formation and Usage (Theoretical and Methodical Aspect)” The aim of the dissertation research is to theoretically define the nature of new terms that emerged in the Kazakh language between 1991 and 2021, to comprehensively describe the features of their formation, standardization, and usage, and to propose a scientific and methodical basis for their effective teaching in the education system. Research objectives: – to determine the scientific meaning of the concepts “new word,” “new usage,” and “new term,” and to clarify their interrelationship; – to describe the stages in the formation of neology as an independent scholarly field, its object of study, and its main scientific principles; – to provide a comprehensive review of the study of new terms in Kazakh linguistics and analyze its main directions and scholarly contributions; – to identify the structural, semantic, and motivational features of new terms and to develop their typological classification; – to determine the quantitative and statistical distribution of new designations in branch terminology during 1991–2021, identify their formation methods (lexical-semantic, morphological, calquing, syntactic), and analyze their productivity; – to describe the stages of standardization of new terms (proposal, expert evaluation, approval, codification, and entry into usage); – to analyze the usage features of new terms and determine the degree of their establishment; – to identify the linguodidactic foundations for teaching new terms in secondary education and describe the specific features of instruction; – to determine ways of developing students’ meta-subject competence through mastering new terms; – to propose an effective model for teaching new terms on the basis of interdisciplinary integration. Research methods. The study employed descriptive, componential analysis, system-structural, and quantitative-statistical methods, which made it possible to reveal the nature of new terms in a comprehensive manner. The descriptive method served as the basis for characterizing key concepts, theoretical conclusions, and terminological processes. The componential analysis method was used to identify the morphemic structure and semantic composition of new terms. The system-structural method made it possible to determine the structural types of terms, their place in the system, and their functions. The quantitative-statistical method was applied to determine the frequency of new terms, their numerical share, and the level of their distribution across different fields. Main provisions (proven scientific hypotheses and other conclusions constituting new knowledge): – the period from 1991 to 2021 is a stage of intensive renewal of Kazakh terminology; this process is directly connected with socio-political independence, scientific and technological progress, digitalization, and globalization. During this period, new terms in Kazakh were formed not as isolated units but in a systematic and multidisciplinary way, laying the foundation for the qualitative and quantitative expansion of the terminological fund; – the formation of new terms is carried out through the interaction of the language’s internal word-formation resources and external linguistic influences. Alongside lexical-semantic, morphological, and syntactic methods, such models as calquing, hybrid, blend, centaur, and contaminant are recognized as productive mechanisms of term formation; – the standardization of new terms is regarded as a systematic staged process. The stages of proposal, expert evaluation, approval, codification, and entry into usage act as the main mechanisms determining the degree to which a term becomes established in scholarly and social communication; – the usage activity and degree of establishment of new terms depend on field-specific characteristics. In the spheres of information technology, economics, law, and education, the spread and productivity of new terms are especially high, whereas in some other fields issues of terminological variation and normalization remain relevant; – teaching new terms in secondary education on the basis of interdisciplinary integration is identified as an effective mechanism for increasing students’ terminological literacy. This approach enables the conscious acquisition of scientific concepts and the systematic perception of educational content. Description of the main research results: – in describing the process of new term formation, concepts used in international scholarship such as coinage, ghost word, prelogism, protologism, retronym, as well as blend, centaur, compound, and hybrid, were analyzed and introduced into the theory of Kazakh terminology; – the formation patterns of new terms that emerged between 1991 and 2021 were analyzed, and a typological classification of new terms was developed; – the stages of standardization of new terms (proposal, expert evaluation, approval, codification, entry into usage) were systematized, and the patterns of their establishment were identified; – the use of new designations in branch terminology was analyzed quantitatively and statistically, and their frequency indicators and level of establishment were assessed; – an elective course titled “New Terms” was introduced into the secondary education system; – Methodical approaches were developed to enhance students’ meta-subject competence through mastering new terms on the basis of interdisciplinary integration; – the developed methodical model and teaching system were tested in experimental work, and their effectiveness and efficiency were scientifically proven. Justification of the novelty and significance of the obtained results: The study stands out for its systematic and comprehensive treatment of the issue of new terms in Kazakh linguistics. First of all, the dissertation takes the new terms that emerged in Kazakh between 1991 and 2021 as a special object of study and describes their formation patterns, structural-semantic features, stages of standardization, and usage characteristics within a unified framework. This made it possible to consider new designations in Kazakh terminology not merely as isolated linguistic units, but in connection with social change, the development of science and technology, and the processes of linguistic normalization. The first aspect of the study’s scientific novelty lies in the analysis and introduction into the theory of Kazakh terminology of concepts from international scholarly discourse such as coinage, ghost word, prelogism, protologism, and retronym, as well as term-formation models such as blend, centaur, compound, and hybrid. This broadened the conceptual and theoretical scope for identifying and describing new terms and enriched the scholarly apparatus of neological research in Kazakh linguistics. Second, the dissertation systematized the formation patterns of new terms that emerged in 1991–2021 and developed their typological classification. It was specified that new terms are formed through lexical-semantic, morphological, syntactic, calquing, hybrid, blend, centaur, and contaminant models, and the productive mechanisms of term formation were identified. This opens the way for assessing the word-formation potential of new terms in Kazakh and for a deeper understanding of the internal patterns of development of the terminological system. Third, the study systematized the stages of standardization of new terms according to the phases of proposal, expert evaluation, approval, codification, and entry into usage. In this way, it was demonstrated that the entry of a new designation into the language system is not a random phenomenon but a complex staged process. Such a conclusion provides a scientific basis for the normalization, evaluation, and introduction of new terms into usage. Fourth, the use of new designations in branch terminology was analyzed quantitatively and statistically, and their frequency indicators and degree of establishment were assessed. As a result, it was found that the activity and consolidation of new terms depend on field-specific characteristics, and that their productivity is especially high in information technology, economics, law, and education. This is valuable because it demonstrates the dynamics of the development of Kazakh terminology on the basis of concrete data. The methodical and scientific-practical significance of the study is also evident in its connection with the education system. Within the dissertation, an elective course entitled “New Terms” was introduced into secondary education, and methodical approaches were developed for mastering new terms on the basis of interdisciplinary integration. These approaches were aimed not only at increasing students’ terminological literacy but also at developing their meta-subject competence. The developed teaching model and system of tasks were tested in experimental work, and their effectiveness was scientifically demonstrated. The theoretical significance of the research results is manifested in several directions. First, the study identified the patterns by which new terms are distinguished from the broader category of new words and rise to the level of an independent scientific-conceptual unit. Second, the directions of research on new vocabulary in Kazakh linguistics were systematized, and their evolution and scholarly tradition were analyzed. Third, the structural-semantic features and typological classification of new terms were scientifically substantiated. Fourth, linguodidactic principles for teaching new vocabulary were clarified, and their place in the education system was determined. The practical significance of the study is also high. The elective course program “New Terms”, terminological exercises, and tasks developed in the course of the work are suitable for use in general secondary schools as well as in higher and specialized educational institutions in such fields as Kazakh language, terminology, lexicology, and applied linguistics. These materials may be used in the educational process by teachers of Kazakh language and literature, university instructors, master’s students, and doctoral students, while terminological centers and research institutions may use them as methodical and linguistic resources. Thus, the dissertation not only expanded the theoretical foundations for the study of new terms in the Kazakh language, but also proposed concrete scientific and methodical mechanisms for their normalization, systematization, and introduction into teaching practice. As a result, the work makes a substantial contribution to the development of Kazakh terminology, the improvement of the quality of the scientific language, and the modernization of educational content. Compliance with directions of scientific development or state programs. The dissertation corresponds to the priority areas of the Concept for the Development of Higher Education and Science in the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2023–2029, the Concept for the Development of Language Policy in the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2023–2029, the Laws “On Education,” “On Science,” and “On Languages,” the State Compulsory Education Standard, and the rules for conducting terminological work. Since the study addresses the issues of scientifically systematizing new terms, their evaluation, normalization, and introduction into the educational process, the work directly contributes to strengthening the scientific function of the state language, updating educational content, and improving the national terminological fund.
