On February 28, 2024, the Board of Directors of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University approved the Sustainable Development Policy of L.N.Gumilyov Eurasian National University NJSC (Protocol No. 04/24). The document was developed in line with modern ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles and reflects the university’s commitment to building a sustainable future.

The university is committed to minimizing its negative environmental impact, using natural resources efficiently, implementing eco-friendly, energy- and water-saving technologies, maintaining high social standards, and fostering conditions for sustainable economic growth.

Role and Key Areas of Activity of the Center for Sustainable Development
The Center for Sustainable Development is a coordinating structural unit of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University responsible for the systematic integration of sustainable development principles and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) standards into the University's educational, research, administrative and operational activities.
The Center's primary objective is to coordinate and advance the University's sustainable development agenda, improve ESG governance mechanisms, monitor the implementation of strategic initiatives, and establish a unified system for collecting, verifying and analyzing data to assess the University's performance and support its participation in international and national sustainability rankings.
The Center's mission is to contribute to the University's long-term sustainable development by integrating environmental, social and governance principles across all areas of its activities, improving resource efficiency, fostering partnerships and promoting a culture of responsibility towards the environment and society.
The Center's activities extend beyond the implementation of the 2024–2026 Sustainable Development Action Plan. They encompass the continuous advancement of the University's sustainability agenda, the initiation of new projects and initiatives, the improvement of internal governance mechanisms, and the adoption of modern ESG practices and tools in line with international trends, national priorities and the University's strategic objectives.
Key Areas of Activity
Strategic Development and Sustainability Coordination: coordinating the implementation of the University's sustainable development policy, monitoring existing plans and programmes, analyzing results, developing proposals to improve sustainability governance, initiating new projects and identifying future priorities.
ESG Analytics and Reporting: collecting, systematizing, verifying and analyzing sustainability data; preparing reports and analytical materials; and providing data and information support for participation in international and national rankings, including QS Sustainability, THE Impact Rankings and UI GreenMetric.
Development of Regulatory and Methodological Documents: drafting, reviewing and updating internal policies, programmes, action plans, methodological guidelines and other documents governing sustainable development and environmental management across the University.
Environmental Sustainability: coordinating initiatives related to the responsible use of natural resources, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, waste segregation and reuse, resource-saving technologies, green infrastructure and the implementation and maintenance of an environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001.
Social Sustainability: supporting the development of an inclusive, accessible and safe university environment, strengthening social infrastructure, promoting the well-being of students and staff, and advancing equal opportunities and social responsibility.
Integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: promoting the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into educational programmes, research activities, student projects and university-wide initiatives, as well as advancing sustainability awareness and education.
Project Coordination and Interdepartmental Cooperation: facilitating cooperation among structural units, faculties and institutes on ESG matters, coordinating university-wide projects, and developing partnerships with government agencies, international organizations, businesses and civil society organizations.
Digitalization and Data Management: developing digital tools for monitoring sustainability indicators, improving data collection, processing and storage, and ensuring the reliability, comparability and transparency of ESG data.
International Cooperation and Partnership Development: identifying and implementing international best practices, participating in relevant initiatives and projects, and strengthening cooperation with organizations and institutions working in sustainable development, environmental protection and ESG.
Communications and Sustainability Culture: communicating the University's ESG agenda, publicizing ongoing initiatives and achievements, organizing training sessions, expert discussions and educational events, and promoting best practices among students and staff.
The Center's activities aim to establish a unified sustainability management system across the University, improve the transparency and quality of ESG data, strengthen cooperation among structural units, and systematically integrate sustainable development principles into all areas of the University's operations. The Center acts not only as a coordinator of monitoring and reporting, but also as an initiator of new solutions, projects and mechanisms that support the University's long-term development in line with contemporary requirements and international sustainability practices
