Abstract (English): the dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the educational programme 8D02310 – Foreign Philology by Beisenova Malika Kanatovna entitled “Communicative-pragmatic features of anglicisms in the Kazakhstani media discourse” The relevance of the research topic lies in the fact that, despite the substantial number of scholarly studies devoted to borrowings from English into other languages, the processes through which Anglicisms enter, are assimilated into, and function in recipient languages, as well as their communicative and pragmatic features in media discourse, remain of particular scholarly interest to media linguistics in Kazakhstan. Under Article 7 of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kazakh is the state language, while Russian is officially used on an equal basis with it. This language situation creates distinctive conditions for the functioning of Anglicisms in Kazakhstani media discourse. The adaptation of Anglicisms and the realization of their pragmatic functions take place within a context of institutional bilingualism. The study is relevant because, in a situation of official bilingualism in which Kazakh and Russian function simultaneously, borrowings from English acquire particular communicative and pragmatic significance. The Concept for the Development of Language Policy in the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2023–2029 emphasizes the importance of English as a means of international integration and scientific and technological development. In this way, the document recognizes the significance of English in the public sphere and provides a basis for the wider use of Anglicisms in Kazakhstani media discourse. Although priority undoubtedly remains with the state language, globalization, digital communication and the media environment are increasing the role of English as a source of new lexical items. Despite growing interest in linguistic borrowing, the communicative and pragmatic features of Anglicisms in Kazakhstani media discourse remain insufficiently explored. Existing studies often consider general trends in borrowing, whereas the distinctive characteristics of Kazakhstan's media space, shaped by multilingualism and cultural diversity, require a separate, comprehensive analysis. The relevance of the present study is therefore determined by the need for a systematic examination of Anglicisms as a significant element of Kazakhstani media discourse, including their functions, formal adaptation and pragmatic influence on audiences. Such an examination is important for the development of media linguistics and sociolinguistics in Kazakhstan. Purist approaches aimed at restricting Anglicisms and replacing them with equivalents in the national languages come into conflict with the communicative and pragmatic aims of media discourse, including speed of communication, expressiveness and responsiveness to global information trends. Consequently, a situation of variable language choice is emerging in Kazakhstan's media space: Anglicisms and their national-language equivalents coexist and compete according to media-text genre, target audience and the author's pragmatic aims. In this context, it is particularly important to examine how Anglicisms function under purist pressure, which pragmatic functions they perform and how audiences perceive them. Investigating these issues allows for a deeper understanding of contemporary linguistic processes in Kazakhstan and reveals the particular nature of media discourse as a space in which global and national language trends interact. The object of the research is Anglicisms functioning in the media discourse of Kazakhstan. The subject of the research is the communicative and pragmatic features of the functioning of Anglicisms within the structure of Kazakhstan’s media discourse. The aim of the research is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the communicative and pragmatic features of Anglicisms in Kazakhstani media discourse and to identify their roles and functions in communication on the basis of Russian- and Kazakh-language media texts. To achieve this aim, the following objectives have been formulated: 1. To summarize and systematize theoretical approaches to the study of Anglicisms in media communication and determine their role as a component of the communicative and pragmatic organization of media texts. 2. To identify the communicative and pragmatic features of Anglicisms in Kazakhstani media discourse, taking into account media-text genre, language of publication and the conditions of a bilingual public sphere. 3. To analyze the morphological integration of Anglicisms as an indicator of their communicative and pragmatic adaptation and systematic establishment in the language of Kazakhstan’s media. 4. To investigate the attitudes of Kazakhstani audiences towards Anglicisms in the media space and establish how they are perceived as communicative and pragmatic units. The sources of the research were Anglicisms found in authentic media texts circulating in Kazakhstan, including materials from leading Kazakhstani news portals, social-media blogs maintained by well-known Kazakhstani bloggers and advertising posts. The empirical corpus comprised 12,000 media texts: 2,000 Russian-language texts and 2,000 Kazakh-language texts in each of three categories—news reports, advertising texts and blogs—published in 2023–2025. The period 2023–2025 was deliberately selected in accordance with the research objectives. First, it represents a continuous three-year period that yields a sufficiently representative body of material without creating an excessively wide chronological range. Second, the study seeks to describe the current stage of the functioning of Anglicisms in Kazakhstan's media space, making it essential to analyze recent linguistic material. Third, digital formats of communication—including social media, blogger discourse, online advertising and online news media—developed particularly actively during this period and constitute major channels through which Anglicisms spread. Fourth, applying the same chronological boundaries to Russian- and Kazakh-language material ensures that the findings can be compared across languages and types of media discourse. The aim and objectives of the research determined the choice of the following methods: 1. Exhaustive sampling was employed to identify every occurrence of Anglicisms in the selected corpus of Russian- and Kazakh-language media texts. This method ensures comprehensive coverage of the material and minimizes accidental omissions of linguistic units. 2. Pragmatic analysis is a method for examining speech or text that focuses on how linguistic resources are used in particular communicative situations to achieve the speaker’s goals. It investigates interaction between author and addressee with due consideration of context, communicative tactics and implicit intentions. 3. The descriptive method was used for the qualitative analysis of the selected Anglicisms, including their pragmatic and morphological characteristics and the ways in which they adapt to the norms of Russian and Kazakh. 4. The comparative method was applied to compare the functioning of Anglicisms in Russian- and Kazakh-language media texts, making it possible to identify both shared and language-specific features of their use. 5. The questionnaire method (a quantitative method) was used to collect empirical data on how language users perceive Anglicisms. The responses make it possible to relate the findings of textual analysis to respondents’ actual language attitudes and evaluations. 6. The analysis of the questionnaire results also employed the Mann–Whitney U test, Spearman’s rank correlation and index analysis. The Mann–Whitney U test was used to identify statistically significant differences between independent groups of respondents. Spearman’s correlation was applied to determine relationships between the frequency of Anglicism use, their perception and attitudes towards them. Index analysis was used to summarize the questionnaire data and calculate composite indicators of Anglicism use, motivation, perception and normative evaluation. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time, the communicative and pragmatic features of Anglicisms functioning in contemporary Kazakhstani media discourse have been identified and systematized. The analysis establishes that the use of English borrowings in Kazakhstani media texts is not limited to a nominative function but serves distinct pragmatic purposes: projecting an image of expertise, targeting specific audience groups and implementing strategies of linguistic economy. The pragmatic analysis of different types of media texts containing Anglicisms reveals the main mechanisms of their functioning, the ways in which they convey information and their communicative influence on addressees. The study proposes an original authorial definition of the term “Anglicism” and develops a concise dictionary of Anglicisms in Kazakhstani media discourse, systematizing the borrowed items according to their meanings, spheres of use and communicative and pragmatic functions. The theoretical significance of the research lies in addressing the insufficient study of Anglicisms in Kazakhstani media discourse from the perspective of their communicative and pragmatic functioning. Although studies of borrowed vocabulary and media language exist, the use of Anglicisms in Kazakhstan's Russian- and Kazakh-language media texts has not yet received comprehensive treatment. The research therefore contributes to a more precise understanding of the pragmatic potential of Anglicisms, their role in the organization of media texts and the specific ways in which they function in a bilingual media environment. The findings broaden theoretical understanding of linguistic changes caused by the influence of English and may contribute to further developments in media linguistics, sociolinguistics, linguistic pragmatics and language-contact studies. The practical significance of the research is that its materials and conclusions can be used to develop courses in media linguistics, sociolinguistics, linguistic pragmatics, lexicology and language-contact theory. The findings may be applied to the analysis of contemporary Russian- and Kazakh-language media texts and to the preparation of teaching and reference materials on Anglicisms in Kazakhstani media discourse. The collected and systematized linguistic data may also be used in lexicographic practice, particularly in compiling dictionaries of Anglicisms, and in teaching philological and journalism-related disciplines. The results may be useful to researchers, teachers, undergraduate and postgraduate students, doctoral candidates, and specialists in media and mass communication. The dissertation puts forward the following conclusions for defense: 1. Anglicisms in contemporary media communication should be viewed not only as products of language contact and elements of a language's vocabulary, but also as significant components of the communicative and pragmatic organization of media texts. They contribute to the transmission of information, the structuring of content and the exertion of influence on the addressee. Their functioning within a media text is linked to the realization of the author's communicative intention, since the choice of an Anglicism is often motivated by the desire to increase a message's information density, enhance its topicality and shape the audience's interpretation of the material. 2. In Kazakhstani media discourse, Anglicisms operate as a systematic communicative and pragmatic resource. Their use is determined not only by the genre, purpose and language of a media text, but also by the characteristics of a bilingual public sphere, in which English borrowings perform nominative, compressive, attention-attracting, identity-marking and expressive functions. In news feeds, Anglicisms primarily perform nominative and terminological, compressive, and status- and expertise-marking functions; in advertising, they fulfil attention-attracting, image-building and persuasive functions; and in blogger discourse, they serve identity-marking, expressive and phatic functions. These differences demonstrate that their pragmatic potential depends on media-text genre. 3. The morphological adaptation of Anglicisms in the Russian- and Kazakh-language segments of Kazakhstani media discourse follows different strategies. The Russian-language segment predominantly preserves the original graphic and phonetic form of Anglicisms, reinforcing associations with modernity, global connectedness and rapid media communication. By contrast, the Kazakh-language segment displays deeper grammatical integration of borrowings: Anglicisms are actively incorporated into Kazakh word formation through affixes, hybrid forms, compounds and calques. These differences are related to the morphological typology of the two languages: the inflectional structure of Russian enables borrowed units to retain their foreign-language appearance for longer, whereas the agglutinative nature of Kazakh facilitates their rapid integration into grammatical relations. This suggests that Kazakh-language media discourse has a more pronounced capacity to develop its own terminology on the basis of Anglicisms, while the Russian-language segment more often transmits global terminology in a relatively unchanged form. 4. Anglicisms in Kazakhstan's media space function as a pragmatically motivated linguistic resource associated primarily with brevity, precision of reference, digital communication and an impression of modernity. Their use is particularly characteristic of informal communication and social media, whereas it is received more cautiously in official and business contexts. Audience attitudes towards Anglicisms are predominantly neutral and pragmatic: respondents recognize their convenience and relevance, while also emphasizing the need for moderate, contextually justified use to preserve the comprehensibility of media texts and linguistic identity. The research hypothesis is that Anglicisms in Kazakhstani media discourse are not incidental lexical borrowings but functionally significant communicative and pragmatic units used to name new realities, compress meaning, attract attention, create an image of modernity and influence target audiences. Their functions vary according to media-text genre, language of publication and the author's communicative purpose.
