Abstract (English): dissertation work submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the educational program “8D02307 - Translation Studies” by Gulsara Kozhakhmetova on the theme: “Translation of jewelry terms in languages of different systems and electronic thesaurus creation”. The dissertation work is carried out at the intersection of such disciplines as Translation studies, Terminology, Computational linguistics and Information technology, and meets the requirements of interdisciplinary research. Relevance of the research theme. At the end of the XX century the forgotten national jewelry craft began to revive in Kazakhstan. Individual jewelers and companies began to focus their efforts on continuing the traditions of jewelry making, mastering the technology of processing metal and precious stones, and modernizing the function of national values. The revival of the jewelry industry in the period of globalization of the modern world puts forward the task of increasing the competitiveness of jewelry vocabulary, which highlighted the ethnic and cultural identity, spiritual and material value of the Kazakh people, and turning Kazakh jewelry vocabulary into the language of production. In this regard, the relevance of conducting a comparative analysis of jewelry vocabulary of the Kazakh language with the vocabulary of other languages is becoming increasingly relevant. The particular relevance of the dissertation work lies in conducting a study of jewelry terms of the Kazakh language, the features of translation and their equivalents in English and Russian. It is known that high-quality translation of jewelry industry terms to other languages contributes to expanding the areas of its use in the native language. Jewelry vocabulary of the Kazakh language has fallen out of use due to various extralinguistic factors, and most of them have become archaic words. It is very important to determine the most effective translation methods in translating jewelry terms. In the digitalization era, there is an urgent need for translation services, requiring a qualitatively new level of translation of cultural and specialized vocabulary. The state program “Digital Kazakhstan” is focused on innovative research during the transition to the current digital system. In this regard, there is an urgent need to create systematized industry-specific electronic multilingual thesauri-dictionaries that facilitate high-quality translation, and the basis for modern automatic translation. The jewelry industry vocabulary has not been specifically studied in an interdisciplinary aspect within the framework of the Theory and practice of translation, Terminology, Computer and Corpus linguistics. Due to the expansion of the scope of use of professional jewelry vocabulary by jewelry industry specialists, the emergence of new types of production materials, processing technologies and equipment, there is an urgent need to develop a multilingual electronic thesaurus. The creation of a multilingual thesaurus of jewelry terms increases the importance of translation in systematization and development of jewelry vocabulary. Theoretical and methodological bases of the research work. The theoretical and methodological basis of the interdisciplinary research work is based on the works of the researchers in translation studies as P. Newmark (1988), M. Snell-Hornby (1988), V.N. Komissarov (1999), I.V. Ubozhenko (2000), and A. Aldasheva (2006), in historical and ethnographic studies of jewelry vocabulary as Kh. Argynbaev (1980, 1987), Sh.Zh. Tohtabaeva (1984), and A.I. Mambetova (2005), in linguistic studies as R. Shoibekov (1993, 2006), Z. Erzhanova (2010), industry-specific terminology as O. Aitbayuly (1988, 2013), Sh. Kurmanbayuly (2014, 2018), and Zh. Beisenova (2011), and in creating a thesaurus as E. Abdrasilov (2009) and M.A. Sambetbaeva (2016). The aim of the research work is to determine the features of the translation of specialized vocabulary of jewelry industry in the Kazakh language into Russian and English languages, and to create a multilingual specialized electronic thesaurus.
The objectives set to achieve the aim:
- to analyze integrated and empirical methods of translation, which occupy a prominent place in the development of modern Translation studies as a scientific discipline that comprehensively covers cultural differences and interdisciplinary factors;
- to identify the main features and common characteristics of jewelry vocabulary in the culture of the Kazakh, Russian and English peoples using the comparative-contrastive method;
- to analyze the problems of translating jewelry vocabulary in museum materials and albums-books about jewelry art, literary works and specialized industry literature, and to determine effective ways of translating them;
- to identify the terms of the jewelry industry of the Kazakh language and determine the ways of forming jewelry terms;
- to identify the problem of creating an electronic multilingual dictionary-thesaurus, which is simultaneously an explanatory and a translation dictionary of a certain subject area.
The object of the research is the translation of specialized jewelry vocabulary into languages of different systems. The subject of the research is the translation of the specialized jewelry vocabulary in the Kazakh language into Russian and English using a multilingual electronic thesaurus. Methods used in the research work. Analysis of theoretical works on Translation studies using general scientific methods, such as comparison, systematization, classification, statistical method, and Translation studies methods: empirical, integrated, lexicographic, modeling. Research materials include vocabulary from ethnographic materials, “Dictionary of Kazakh Jewelry Art” by R. Shoibekov, book-albums in 3 languages about national jewelry crafts, literary works of Kazakh writers, translated into other languages, specialized literature, and the unified republican electronic database of terms in science, education, technology and economics, in public and social life. More than 3000 lexical units have been included in a multilingual electronic thesaurus as the research material.
Scientific novelty of the research:
- The features of translation of jewelry terms based on the integrated (M.Snell-Hornby) and empirical approaches (P.Newmark), corresponding to the requirements of interdisciplinary research in the scientific areas of Translation studies, Corpus and Computer linguistics, Terminology, and Information Technology have been revealed. These approaches in modern Translation studies are fundamental in translating terminology, and an effective method in creating a multilingual electronic thesaurus of jewelry terms.
- Universal and unique features that reflect the cultural code of the people, reflected in jewelry, have been identified in the study.
- Effective methods and strategies of translating jewelry vocabulary in museum materials, albums-books about jewelry art, in literary works and specialized industry literature into English and Russian have been identified.
- The specialized jewelry terms of the Kazakh language have been systematized, the ways of jewelry term formation have been determined.
- A multilingual thesaurus of jewelry terms have been developed for translators and specialists in the jewelry industry. The thesaurus was compiled on the basis of the international data scheme Thez in the Digital Library web platform. The terms of the jewelry industry of the Kazakh, Russian and English languages have been systematized according to faceted classification, rubrication, and the translation of jewelry vocabulary of the Kazakh language into other languages has been clarified.
Theoretical significance of the research. The results of the research and conclusions contribute to clarification of some scientific and theoretical principles of domestic Translation studies concerning national-cultural and industry vocabulary. The results of the research work can be useful in developing problems of Translation studies related to the translation of terms of a certain area and compilation of multilingual electronic thesaurus. Practical significance of the research. The results of the study can be used in the practice of teaching Kazakh and English languages, Lexicography, in conducting elective courses on the theory and practice of translation. The multilingual thesaurus can be used by translators and specialists in the jewelry industry.
The findings proposed for defense:
- The use of empirical and integrated methods in modern Translation studies meets the requirements for conducting interdisciplinary research in the area of jewelry industry. The results of the interdisciplinary study of terminology allow for the effective use of Сomputer technology achievements in Translation studies.
- In modern Translation studies, the integrated approach is effective in creating a multilingual electronic thesaurus of jewelry terms. This approach allows for the translation of individual lexical units, identification of translation features at the text level, semantic translation to clarify the meaning of jewelry in a specific context, and determination of the term meaning from the point of general cultural universals and unique features, as well as ethnographic specifics.
- Jewelry names are characterized by universal and unique features for each ethnic culture. The uniqueness of jewelry names in the Kazakh language is associated with ethnic, historical motives, national traditions, natural phenomena, flora and fauna, animalistic motives, as well as the specific function of the jewelry. The uniqueness of jewelry names in the Russian language is associated with mythical motives, production area, informative character of jewelry, flora and fauna, and jeweler’s name. The uniqueness of jewelry names in the English language, as well as Western European jewelry, is using the name of jeweler or designer, who created the jewelry, geometric shapes, and emotional experiences. When translating the jewelry names, dynamic/functional equivalents are used.
- Jewelry vocabulary of the Kazakh language, presented in museum materials, albums-books about jewelry art, in literary works and specialized industry literature, in most cases are not precisely translated. In ethnographic materials, Russian and English translations of Kazakh jewelry names have a literal translation without preserving the national specificity. Such a translation sometimes distorts the meaning and value of the jewelry and is not accessible for the representatives of other cultures. In the case of inaccurate translations of individual terms, more preferable equivalents are proposed, taking into account functional analogs, contextual translation, modulations, interpretation and other translation methods in reflecting the spiritual world, sacred meaning and purposes of using national jewelry.
- After gaining independence, the national jewelry began to revive in Kazakhstan. In the modern period, jewelers of Kazakhstan participate in international exhibitions, and Kazakh jewelry brands have emerged. There is an active process of developing jewelry terms in the Kazakh language. “Folk terms” of jewelry are moving into the category of production terms. The process of jewelry terminization is reflected in the multilingual thesaurus of jewelry terms. The thesaurus simultaneously functions as a multilingual dictionary and a search engine to get information about a jewelry product. The thesaurus is based on the international data scheme Thez in the Digital Library web platform. Jewelry terms of the Kazakh, Russian and English languages have been systematized taking into account the facet relationship, rubrication, and the translation of Kazakh jewelry terms into other languages has been clarified.
