International Online Foreign languages Olympiad held by the faculty of International Relations

On February 29, 2024 the annual international Olympiad in foreign languages (English, German, French, Spanish) among students of non-linguistic directions of education was held by the Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty of International Relations of L.N. Gumilyov ENU.

The aim of the event is to support the idea of multilingualism, increase motivation to learn foreign languages and expand the socio-cultural, linguo-country and intercultural competence of students.

The event began with the opening ceremony, where the welcoming speeches were made by S.B. Makysh, a member of the Board - Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, M.M. Kosybaev, Dean of the Faculty of International Relations, L.K. Meyrambekova, Head of the Foreign Languages Department of the Faculty of International Relations.

They noted that today, against the background of continuous deepening of the globalization process, exchange and cooperation become more and more important for each person and each country. And, undoubtedly, knowledge of foreign languages and the ability to eliminate language barriers are one of the most important conditions for the development and strengthening of these ties. Mastering a foreign language opens new horizons for us. It becomes a key to the world of another culture, helps not only to learn and understand its representatives, but also to look at ourselves in a new way.

They also emphasized the importance of such events, which are a great platform for students to exchange knowledge and skills and an opportunity to demonstrate their high level of foreign language skills.

 The Olympiad was held online, which allowed to expand the geography of the event participants and provided an opportunity for students from other countries to participate. More than 150 students from 3 countries and 17 universities took part in it.

There were also partner universities of the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University among them.

 These were students from Sochi State University (Russia), Moscow State Linguistic University (Russia), Tyumen Industrial University (Russia), Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation (Russia), International University of Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyzstan), Osh State University (Kyrgyzstan), Urgench State University (Uzbekistan), Institute of Foreign Languages and International Tourism of Pyatigorsk State University (Russia).

The following universities of Kazakhstan participated in the Olympiad: E.A. Buketov Karaganda State University (Karaganda). Karaganda Technical University named after Abylkas Saginov (Karaganda), Karaganda University of Kazpotrebsoyuz (Karaganda), Pavlodar Pedagogical University named after Әlkеy Margulan (Pavlodar), Kokshetau University named after S. Ualikhanov (Kokshetau), International University of Astana (Astana), KAZGUU University named after M.S.Narikbayev (Astana), Kazakh Agrotechnical University named after S. Seifullin (Astana)

Students of the 1st year of non-language specialties participated in the Olympiad in English, students of non-language specialties of the second year in German and French.

The Olympiad consisted of two stages: I round - listening; II round - speaking on the proposed topic.

The right to participate in the second round, the final round of the Olympiad, was granted to the participants who scored more than 80% of correct answers according to the results of the first round in individual competition.

D.O. Saliyeva, senior lecturer of the department of foreign languages, faculty of international relations, L.N. Gumilyov ENU, has been the moderator of the Olympiad for many years. Gumilyov ENU; Vanessa Pujols Mehia, doctoral student of the University of Hull, England; Beksultanova Gulzada Azimkanovna, candidate of philological sciences, associate professor, dean of the faculty of the Eastern campus of UNPK International University of Kyrgyzstan; Duisekova Kulyash Kerimbekovna, doctor of philological sciences, professor of the Department of Foreign Philology, Faculty of Philology, L.N. Gumilyov ENU ; professor of the Department of Foreign Languages, L.N. Gumilyov ENU; Yessengalieva Anna Mikhailovna - professor of the department of foreign languages, faculty of international relations, L.N. Gumilyov ENU; Zhusupova Gauhar Musaevna, senior lecturer of the department of foreign languages, faculty of philology, L.N. Gumilyov ENU.

The jury members noted the high level of preparation of all participants of the Olympiad.
