Architectural pedagogy and professional practice: conceptualizing the paradigms in teaching the students of architecture
On June 6, 2024, foreign professor, architect Rehman Faisal Muhamad held a seminar for teaching staff of the Department of Architecture on the topic: «Architectural pedagogy and professional practice: conceptualization of teaching paradigms for architecture students». At the seminar, the professor discussed various aspects and challenges of teaching architecture in higher education institutions, and shared his experience and innovations that he introduced at his university. Key ideas proposed by the professor include:
- Vertical studio: This approach involves students from different courses working together on one project. Junior students can learn from seniors, while seniors can gain inspiration from the fresh perspectives of their junior colleagues. This method promotes the exchange of knowledge and experience between students of different levels of training.
- Real studio projects in teaching: The professor suggested integrating real projects into the educational process so that students could immediately see how a project is built in real life, and not just study theoretical aspects. This helps keep students connected to real-life project challenges and improves their preparation for professional work.
- Pre-design questionnaire: Before starting work on the project, students are asked to fill out a questionnaire so that they can mentally become the «customers» of the project. For example, if students are designing a cafe, they should think like restaurateurs: what type of cafe will it be? Who is it intended for? How many and what zones will be provided? This approach helps students develop business thinking and consider the economic viability and needs of the city.
- Architectural consulting in university: Prof. Rehman Faisal Muhamad spoke in detail about how he introduced consulting services in his university. Many architectural studios in the city began to turn to the university for help. He explained the main steps in organizing consulting services and their components. This brings benefits to all participants: students receive experience of cooperation with real companies, teachers receive additional payment, and the university receives additional income and recognition in professional circles. This approach helps improve the university’s reputation among entrepreneurs and clients of consulting services.
These innovations and methods proposed by Professor Rehman Faisal Muhamad can significantly improve the quality and practicality of architecture education in higher education institutions, as well as strengthen the links between universities and the professional community.
