
The Rector of ENU held a reporting meeting in front of the public

On September 30, 2021, Chairman of the Management Board – Rector of the "L.N. Gumilyov ENU" Yerlan Sydykov made a report to the public in an online format.
The meeting was held with the participation of students and their parents, employers, representatives of the scientific and pedagogical community and the media.
The Rector reported on the qualitative changes over the past year in the field of strategic development of the university.
"The pandemic has become a serious challenge not only for our university, but also for the entire education system. Additional resources were needed to provide online training to 20 thousand students. More than 1 billion tenge has been allocated to increase the speed of the Internet channel, purchase servers, computer equipment, switches and Wi-Fi access points," the scientist noted.
The University has been operating for the first year under the conditions of a new organizational and legal form of a non-profit joint-stock company. The composition of the Board of Directors and the Management Board has been approved, committees of the Board of Directors and the Internal Audit Service have been established. The ENU development strategy for 2021-2025 has been approved.
6 priority scientific clusters are being implemented: physical sciences and nuclear technologies; mathematics and information technologies; biology, biomedicine and biotechnology; engineering; chemistry and Earth sciences; social sciences and humanities.
In 2020, compared to 2019, the number of publications in the Scopus database increased by 35%. The average number of citations per document was 3.9.
ENU is also among the leading universities in the country by the number of scientific journals included in the list of recommended publications of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as by indexing in international databases. Thus, out of 6 journals of Kazakhstan indexed in Scopus, 3 journals are published in ENU. 152 scientific projects were implemented at ENU in 2020.
In February 2021, according to the Resolution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the state stake in JSC "Nuclear Technology Park" was transferred to ENU. The joining of the Park contributes to the expansion of the scientific and production base of high-tech radiation and nuclear technologies and will become the basis for the organization of industrial practice and research work of students.
As the first major step in the field of commercialization, ENU plans to place a new production of nuclear track membrane filters for water purification on the basis of the Park.
Students are taught according to 256 educational programs. 3 MBA programs and 5 EMBA programs, 24 Minor programs have been developed.
In the 2020-2021 academic year, 347 undergraduates and 28 doctoral students completed a scientific internship at leading foreign universities included in the Top 500 QS rating. At the same time, the number of interns at ENU who come from other universities of the country is growing every year. If last year we trained 166 people, then this year – 225.
The University traditionally occupies a leading position in the institutional and specialized ratings of Kazakhstan accreditation agencies.
In 2021, the university improved its position in the QS world ranking and took 328th place. ENU is the only university in Central Asia in the QS Top 50 Under 50, where it ranks 43rd. We are on a par with such world universities as the University of London, the University of South Australia and the Israel Institute of Technology.
In 2020, 43 programs participated in the specialized rating of NCE "Atameken", of which 21 ENU educational programs took 1-3 places, i.e. 49%.
The university carries out international cooperation on the basis of more than 400 contracts with foreign universities and research centers.
Since 2001, the Lomonosov Moscow State University campus has been operating on the basis of ENU. The university intends to open a second campus of a leading foreign university. To do this, an agreement has been signed with the University of Arizona. To date, ENU is represented in 19 international rankings, whereas three years ago it participated in only 6.
Last academic year, ENU implemented a program to attract foreign specialists on a remote basis. A total of 345 foreign professors were involved, including 80 in the distance format.
Currently, 12 ENU cultural and educational centers are successfully operating, opened in Russia, Belgium, Iran, Turkey, China, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Pakistan.
"As part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Eurasian National University, a new Sports and Recreation Complex has been put into operation, IoT and Media Design Laboratories, the "ACT Huawei" Academy, "DOSTYQ" Alley and "Alumni Alley" have been opened," the rector stressed.
The construction of a complex of "Student dormitories" for 2361 places in the area of A.Baitursynov and K.Azerbayev streets has begun at the expense of the investor. The phased commissioning of dormitories will allow solving the problem of lack of places.
The university administration pays special attention to improving the welfare and working conditions of employees. In September 2020, the salary of the teaching staff will be increased by 20%, and from September 1, 2021 by another 10%. Currently, the average salary of a teacher is 285 thousand tenge, a senior teacher is 327 thousand tenge, an associate professor is 406 thousand tenge and a professor is 471 thousand tenge.
"We have outlined many ambitious goals in the Development Strategy for 2021-2025. They also determine our main priorities for the upcoming academic year."
ENU intends to become an open platform for research, innovation and commercialization. To do this, the share of innovative programs, including those from the Atlas of New Professions, will be increased to 12%, MBA and DBA programs will be implemented together with foreign partners, and a digital ecosystem will be created.
All the priorities set are not just a list of tasks for the year, they are systemic and interrelated actions aimed at the development of our university," the rector summed up.
Following the results of the reporting meeting, the Rector of ENU answered the questions received in the face-to-face and remote format. The head of the university instructed to take control of the issues and promised to consider them in the near future.
