Senior Managers of Kazakhstani Universities were Trained at ENU
The L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University hosted a training program on the module “Talent Management” for rectors, vice-rectors, deans and department directors of domestic universities. Top managers of universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan were trained in effective management.
The event was organized with the assistance of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and Nazarbayev University. According to the organizers, this course is aimed at creating and expanding highly professional and effective management teams of universities that have skills to manage changes in a rapidly changing environment.
The participants of the course were welcomed by ENU Vice-Rector for Strategic Development Duman Aitmagambetov who expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the staff of Nazarbayev University for organizing advanced training courses for top management of domestic universities.
“Today’s event is dedicated to one of the most pressing global problems – talent management. This topic is also relevant in our country. It is known that in the modern world there is a struggle for talents. Whoever wins here will succeed. Our task is not to stay away from this competition.
It is no coincidence that the Talent Management module is taking place at our university. After all, from the very beginning, one of the main goals of the university was to gather talents and create conditions for them. We are all well aware that talented teachers, talented students, talented managers are the key to a successful university,” ENU Vice-Rector said.
He also added that today’s program is devoted to a modern approach to this topic, the use of the recent methods and tools in talent management.
“It is also important to get acquainted with the domestic and foreign experience of working with talents. I am sure that the program will contribute to the systematic conduct of our work in this direction and its effectiveness,” D. Aitmagambetov summed up.
One of the key speakers of the training course was Professor, certified MBTI, WAVE and DISC coach, Rector of the Netherlands Business Academy Jan Van Zwieten, who shared with the audience his experience and knowledge in the field of talent management. According to him, the talent management system in the Netherlands was created based on the fact that about 45 percent of students in Dutch universities are young people, 30 percent are foreign students, the rest are adults from 30 to 55 years old who also came to study.
“Considering this factor, we began to study a new type of management, and this changed the approach for teachers, the rector’s office and the board. Talent management is an integrated approach to the selection, evaluation and development of personnel potential. The goal of talent management is to create a comfortable environment for the development and growth of an employee who is able to effectively apply knowledge and skills.
In Kazakhstan, in my opinion, the situation is somewhat different. Statistics show that in your country and in other countries, most of the students continue their studies at the PhD level and go into science, write scientific papers, work, but at the same time lose time for their professional development. In the Netherlands, the opposite is true. The vast majority of students develop in the professional field, putting their knowledge into practice, go to work in a company, gaining experience, and only one percent goes to PhD studies. And it gives good indicators. In this regard, I think that in your universities it is necessary to change this factor so that the bias goes towards professional development,” Jan Van Zwieten said.
Sergey Khristolyubov, QS Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, joined the seminar via video link. He analyzed the situation in the field of talent management.
“Our mission is to assist motivated people around the world in realizing their own potential through the support of international mobility, educational achievements and career development,” Sergey Khristolyubov said. The speaker highlighted needs assessment, management of available human resources and involvement of leading teachers and staff as priorities.
Within the framework of the training module “Talent Management” which offers methods of talent management and management tools based on the principle of meritocracy, the course participants received the knowledge, skills and innovative technologies necessary for effective management of universities in an increasingly complex and dynamic environment.
According to the event participants e, the seminar, held within the walls of the country’s leading university – ENU, was very useful from the point of view of personnel management and the search for new solutions in this matter.
As was noted by Nurlan Sergaliyev, Rector of the Makhambet Utemisov West Kazakhstan University, the issue of training and advanced training of top management of universities is currently relevant.
“I consider it timely and necessary to conduct a training course for university leaders. During these courses, we learned a lot from colleagues, invited foreign speakers on management strategy, all the changes taking place, risk management, marketing, etc.
The course program is informative and rich. We are glad to be here, to take something new, to share our vision, and I express my gratitude to the organizers of the event – the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Nazarbayev University and ENU for the good organization of the seminar,” M.Utemisov WKU Rector said.
As Ainash Kudysheva, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of the South Kazakhstan State Pedagogical University noted, today the issue of talent management, recruiting talented youth and specialists is acute for regional universities.
“Human resources are the most important in the work of the university, and this is perhaps a painful issue, especially for regional universities. Because we are interested in attracting talented young people, professionals in their field who speak several languages and have studied abroad, but there is a certain problem. As we know, young people tend to leave for Astana and Almaty after graduation. Of course, we use different tools to attract and retain young and talented specialists at home, but it is worth recognizing that this work has not yet been implemented. Therefore, today I would like to hear technologies for attracting talented professionals and some strong keys to solve this problem. For me, as a vice-rector for academic affairs, it is important to attract the best teachers, with a broad outlook, inquisitive, looking for new knowledge, those who really want to work with students,” Vice-Rector of the South Kazakhstan State Pedagogical University shared.
The work of the training seminar was conducted in five breakout sessions on various topics in the format of questions and answers: the experience of foreign universities in implementing a talent management system; working with talents in the international educational space; talent management on the example of Nazarbayev University; talent management as a personnel practice in Kazakhstan. The result was a practical session where various problems and opportunities faced by leaders in higher education were considered.
According to the organizers, the program will allow rectors, vice-rectors, deans and department directors of Kazakhstani universities to study the experience of foreign higher educational institutions in implementing the talent management system and working with talents in the international educational space, as well as talent management as a personnel practice in Kazakhstan. Studying the program will allow the participants to get acquainted with the methods and tools of talent management.
