Volunteer Training Course under the “1+2 Model”

The Center for Inclusive Support organized a training course for volunteers on accompanying people with disabilities using the «1+2” model.
The goal of the course was to enhance the capacity of volunteers involved in developing the university’s inclusive educational environment and to build skills for supporting students with special educational needs.
The training consisted of three modules.
The first module focused on introducing inclusion and volunteerism. Speakers from the Association of Legal Entities “National Volunteer Network” discussed with participants the role of volunteers in an inclusive environment, ethical principles and boundaries of interaction with students with special educational needs, as well as the principles of the “1+2” support model. Working in small groups helped participants develop verbal and non-verbal support skills.
The second training module was practical. Specialists from the public foundation “Asyl Amal” demonstrated to student volunteers methods of providing first aid and conducted practical skill-building sessions. During the class, volunteers reinforced their knowledge and learned to act calmly and coherently in emergency situations.
The third module was presented by sociology department lecturer Zhuldiz Sembina, who provided a detailed overview of effective communication skills and emotional intelligence in volunteer work with students with special educational needs. She also discussed physical, communicative, and social barriers and ways to overcome them.
At the end of the course, participants received manuals titled “Ethics and Culture of Communication with Students with Special Educational Needs,” developed by the Center for Inclusive Support of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (ENU).
As a result of the training, 57 student volunteers, including participants of the academic mobility program and representatives of the ENU College, were awarded certificates of course completion.
The knowledge and skills they acquired will enable them to effectively support students with special educational needs and contribute to creating an accessible educational environment.
