Silver University: Learning, Growing, and Inspiring - at Any Age

On November 5, 2025, the Institute of Continuing Education held an online course for the listeners of the Silver University titled “The Third Age — Time to Live Wider.” The course was dedicated to a new, most conscious, and productive stage of life.
The lecturer, Irina Zakharova, Associate Professor of the “Green Economy” Department at the Tashkent State University of Economics, presented current research and expert experience, emphasizing that the age of 50+ is not an end, but the beginning of a second adulthood - a time to use accumulated knowledge and experience for personal development and service to society.
During the course, participants viewed this life stage as a time of freedom, self-realization, and deeper understanding of life’s meaning.
Participant Shaiza Kabykenova noted that the course helped her better understand the stages of human development and emphasized the importance of the involvement of older adults in the Silver University.
Participant Irina Ivanova shared that the course on developing thinking gave her “an understanding of her life and actions.” In her words, life after 50 marks the beginning of a second adulthood, during which a person revisits life’s lessons — but with the wisdom of experience.
Participants highlighted the importance of online courses, as they play a key role in promoting active longevity and social integration of the older generation. This learning format removes traditional barriers and opens new opportunities for personal growth, social engagement, and maintaining cognitive functions.
The main advantages of online learning are its geographical and physical accessibility. Participants can join lectures by leading experts regardless of their place of residence. The ability to study from home is especially important for people with limited mobility, and it also allows learners to choose their own pace. In addition, the absence of travel and accommodation costs makes quality education more affordable and cost-effective.
Learning at an older age is a powerful tool for maintaining health. Acquiring new knowledge, participating in discussions, and performing practical exercises stimulate the brain, improve memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. Continuous intellectual activity reduces the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Classes also help relieve heavy thoughts, combat boredom and apathy, and fill life with meaning and positive engagement.
Within the Silver University, like-minded individuals gathered, strengthening social connections and reducing loneliness - one of the key challenges of older age. The online courses will continue.
