A researcher from ENU presented her scientific work on the creation of an academic Kazakh language corpus at the University of Birmingham (UK)

Within the framework of the research project “Digital Humanities: Development of the Academic Corpus of the Kazakh Language”, Professor Gulnar Sarseke, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Kazakh Linguistics, and Principal Investigator of the project, visited the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom) from 21 October to 2 November 2025 to present her research project.
During the visit, Professor G. Sarseke held a meeting with Dr Paul Thompson, Director of the Centre for Corpus Research at the University of Birmingham and a leading expert in Applied Corpus Linguistics.
During the meetings, the scholars discussed the creation of an academic word list, the identification of subject-specific (disciplinary) keywords in the Kazakh language, and the development of an academic dictionary.
Dr Paul Thompson provided valuable insights and methodological recommendations for Professor Sarseke’s forthcoming dictionary, “Academic Key Wordlists: Academic Written Kazakh Corpus”, which is being developed within the framework of the project.
It should be noted that Dr Paul Thompson is a recognised scholar in the field of corpus linguistics and has been serving as Director of the Centre for Corpus Research at the University of Birmingham since 2009. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the international scientific journal Applied Corpus Linguistics and a leading specialist in specialised discourses and applied corpus studies. With Dr Paul Tompson's recommendations and suggestions, many works in the field of corpus linguistics have been published in languages other than English.
This meeting marked an important step in strengthening international cooperation in advancing the development of the academic corpus of the Kazakh language.
