
Participation of the Students of the Department of Archaeology and Ethnology in the «LVIII Ural-Volga Archaeological Conference of Students and Young Scientists»

11 students of the Department of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Faculty of History at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (head of the delegation – 2nd-year doctoral student A.T. Dukombayev) took part in the All-Russian Scientific Conference “LVIII Ural-Volga Archaeological Conference of Students and Young Scientists” (UPASK), held on February 2–4, 2026, in Chelyabinsk at Chelyabinsk State University.
A total of 147 students from 31 universities and one research organization participated in the conference, representing Astana, Astrakhan, Barnaul, Volgograd, Vyatka, Yekaterinburg, Yelabuga, Izhevsk, Yoshkar-Ola, Kazan, Kurgan, Moscow, Naberezhnye Chelny, Novosibirsk, Orenburg, Penza, Perm, Samara, Saratov, Tomsk, Tyumen, Cheboksary, Chelyabinsk, Cherepovets, and Ufa.

At the Bronze Age Archaeology section, the following students presented papers: Sultan Akerke Sakenkyzy (4th year) – “Wells at Bronze Age Settlements of the Ural-Kazakhstan Steppes: Construction and Function” (Academic supervisor: Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, Director of the K.A. Akishev Research Institute of Archaeology M.K. Khabdulina); Zakumbayev Azamat Rashiduly (4th year) – “Traces of Chariot Complexes in Kazakhstan (based on materials from the Northern, Central and Western regions)” (same supervisor); Aiganova Gulnaz Rustemovna (4th year) – “Transformation of Andronovo Head Ornaments in Kazakh Ethnography” (same supervisor).
At the Early Iron Age Archaeology section: Eremeeva Daria Aleksandrovna (3rd year) – “Archaeological Evidence of Wusun Contacts with China in the Early Iron Age” (Supervisor: Senior Lecturer T.V. Brynza); Uali Alikhan Kairatuly (2nd year) – “Winter Camps of the Saka and Kazakhs: Natural and Climatic Factors and Continuity of Tradition” (Supervisor: Senior Lecturer D.T. Tleugabulov); Muratuly Yerasyl (4th year) – “Studies of Saka Warrior Burials with an Earring” (Supervisor: M.K. Khabdulina); Aigazina Dina Revmironna (4th year) – “Decoration and Symbolism of Headdresses of Steppe Queens of the Early Iron Age of Kazakhstan” (Supervisor: M.K. Khabdulina); Medvedev Kirill Petrovich (4th year) – “The Symbol of Warrior Costume on Deer Stones” (Supervisor: T.V. Brynza).
At the Medieval Archaeology of the Ural-Volga Region section Alimzhan Ali Erbolovich (3rd year) – “Botagai Mausoleum: Issues of Study and Preservation of the Monument” (Supervisor: T.V. Brynza).
At the Modern Period Archaeology section Valikhanova Milena Bulatovna (4th year) – “Results of Research on Tombstone Structures of the Karaotkel Muslim Cemetery” (Supervisor: T.V. Brynza).
At the Theory and Methods of Archaeological Research section Ospanov Alikhan Darkhanovich (3rd year) – “The Kumay Complex: Sacred Landscape and Continuity of Ritual Space from the Bronze Age to the Present” (Supervisor: D.T. Tleugabulov).

The presentations delivered by the students of the Department of Archaeology and Ethnology generated significant interest among conference participants. An active discussion followed the presentations, addressing key aspects of the research.
As part of the conference program, students visited the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography of Chelyabinsk State University and attended workshops and thematic lectures by leading specialists:
Kislenko Dmitry Aleksandrovich - Director of the Miass Local History Museum, and Goncharova Evgenia Nikolaevna - Head of the Department of Ancient History of the Peoples of the Urals at the Sverdlovsk Regional Museum of Local History named after O.E. Kler – workshop “Methods of Manufacturing Stone Tools”;
Ankushev Maksim Nikolaevich - Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Researcher at the Federal Scientific Center of Mineralogy and Geoecology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences – lecture “Modern Methods for Studying the Composition of Ancient Metal Artifacts”;
Kupriyanova Elena Vladislavovna - Candidate of Historical Sciences, Director of the Educational and Research Center for the Study of Nature and Humans, Associate Professor at the Department of Russian and Foreign History of Chelyabinsk State University – lecture “Problems of Restoration of Complex Bronze Age Costume Assemblages”;
Grudochko Ivan Valeryevich - Candidate of Historical Sciences, Researcher at the Scientific and Educational Center for Eurasian Studies, Associate Professor at the Department of National and Foreign History of South Ural State University – lecture “The Historical and Archaeological Phenomenon of ‘Kurgans with Whiskers’”.
