More than 130 young researchers from four countries took part in the «Russian Language in the 21st Century» conference in Astana

For the past 13 years, February has been marked by the annual International Student Research Conference “Russian Language in the 21st Century: Research by Young Scholars,” organized by the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics (Head of the Department – E.Zhuravleva; Conference Coordinator – G. Samsenova). The conference is included in the official Research Events Plan of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.
In 2026, the conference was co-organized by Surgut State Pedagogical University, Omsk State Pedagogical University, and Southern Federal University. Over the years, the conference has become a highly anticipated academic event for students from Kazakhstan and abroad. The conference proceedings, indexed article-by-article in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI), have become a hallmark of this scholarly event.
The conference brought together more than 130 participants from universities in Kazakhstan (Astana, Petropavlovsk, Taldykorgan, Shymkent), Russia (Moscow, Surgut, Tula, Yelets, Rostov-on-Don, Kazan, Krasnoyarsk, Omsk, Ivanovo, Cheboksary, Yakutsk), Azerbaijan (Baku), and China. The event was held in a hybrid format. Students from Surgut, Omsk (Russia), and Petropavlovsk (Kazakhstan) attended in person.
At the opening ceremony, participants were welcomed by representatives of the co-organizing universities: S.Duysengazy, Dean of the Faculty of Philology at ENU; V. Zasypkin, Rector of Surgut State Pedagogical University; N.Ganushchak, Dean of the Faculty of Philology at Surgut State Pedagogical University; E.Vidanov, Head of the Department of Russian Language and Linguodidactics at Omsk State Pedagogical University; Z.Rezhuk, Head of the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language and Methods of Teaching at Southern Federal University; and E.Zhuravleva, Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.
Students from Omsk ceremonially presented a Letter of Appreciation from the Rector of Omsk State Pedagogical University to Dean S.Duysengazy.
Professor E.Zhuravleva, Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, highlighted the steadily growing interest in the conference among students from Kazakhstan and abroad, the high level of originality demonstrated in the research papers, and the continuous expansion of the department’s international partnerships.
At the plenary session, the following students delivered presentations: Aurora Loginova (Surgut, Russia), Asyl Islamova (Astana, Kazakhstan), Andrey Kreknin (Omsk, Russia), and Anastasia Simakova (Rostov-on-Don, Russia). All presentations generated significant interest and lively discussion.
During the 8 sectional meetings, participants presented their research findings, delivered multimedia presentations, and engaged in discussion by answering questions from the audience.
The section moderators and jury members from ENU included Doctor of Philology Sh. Zharkynbekova, Doctor of Philology Zh. Jambayeva, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences B.Galiyeva, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences B. Asmagambetova, PhD Zh. Seliverstova, Candidate of Philology A.Nurgazina, Candidate of Philology M. Sharipova, and PhD M. Loginova. Each section was evaluated by an international jury composed of scholars from Astana, Surgut, Omsk, and Rostov-on-Don.
Jury members noted that selecting the best research papers was a challenging task, as all presenters demonstrated a high level of academic competence, strong command of their research material, independence in interpreting data and formulating conclusions, and active engagement in scholarly discussion.
After the sectional sessions concluded, international students took part in a cultural program, visiting the museums of L.N. Gumilyov ENU and exploring the main landmarks of Astana.
On the second day, the conference concluded with a final plenary session. The chairs of the sections summarized the results and announced the authors of the best research papers. The winners were awarded first-, second-, and third-degree diplomas, and additional certificates of distinction were presented in special nominations.
All participants noted that the conference was held at a high professional level and provided memorable opportunities for scholarly interaction among students from different countries.
We congratulate all participants on the successful presentation of their research and look forward to meeting again in 2027.
