Environmental Science Students Planted Young Oak Trees on Ecologist Day

On June 5, celebrated worldwide as World Environment Day and Ecologist Day, first-year students of the Environmental Science and Natural Resource Management educational program, together with Biotechnology students of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, carried out an environmental campaign by planting young oak trees. The event was organized under the guidance of the faculty members of the Department of Environmental Management and Engineering: Gulmira Makasheva, Zhumabike Bakeshova, Ainur Daribay, and Gulnur Saspugayeva.
The significance of this initiative lies in the fact that the saplings were grown by the students themselves from ordinary acorns. For several months, the future environmental specialists and biotechnologists carefully nurtured the young plants, maintaining appropriate temperature conditions, watering them regularly, and ensuring proper care.
The campaign was held as part of the annual “Plant Your Own Tree” initiative, organized by the Ombudsperson of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Neli Shapekova, based on the author’s course “Gift the Earth a Garden!” developed by environmental volunteer Yuri Gashek from Pavlodar.
Planting trees that they had grown with their own hands symbolizes the students’ responsible attitude toward environmental protection, their professional development, and their commitment to making a tangible contribution to nature conservation. The young oak trees will not only beautify the university grounds but will also become an important part of the ecosystem. Oaks help purify the air, support biodiversity, and can live for centuries, serving as a lasting reminder of the environmental awareness and civic responsibility of the younger generation.
This initiative is a vivid example of how environmental knowledge and practical skills can be transformed into meaningful actions aimed at preserving our natural heritage for future generations.
