
Botany Field Practice Academic Year 2025–2026

Under the supervision of G.M. Atayeva, Candidate of Biological Sciences and Acting Associate Professor of the Department of General Biology and Genomics, and A.D. Spanbayev, PhD, Associate Professor, first-year students of the Biology Educational Program from groups BG-11, BG-12, and BG-13 took part in the field practice within the framework of the course "Botany".
The practice was conducted at the Department of General Biology and Genomics of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University. During the field practice, first-year students expanded and deepened both their theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired through lectures and laboratory classes in the areas of plant anatomy, plant morphology, and plant systematics covered in the Botany course.
The field practice enabled students to apply their knowledge in real environmental conditions, develop observation and research skills, and gain valuable experience in studying plant diversity and classification.
In natural environmental conditions, the students studied plant species, families, and phytocenoses, as well as their adaptations to environmental factors. Based on the characteristics of the organisms, they identified the main life forms of plants, their seasonal changes, and the peculiarities of their reproduction and distribution. A detailed study of the regional flora was made possible through the collection and examination of more than 50 herbarium specimens representing various plant species.
During the field practice, the students were divided into groups of six and conducted research in various parks throughout the city. Each group independently carried out assigned tasks related to the study of vegetation, collection of herbarium specimens, and description of the local flora. Working in small teams contributed to the development of collaboration skills, effective distribution of responsibilities, and the joint solution of research tasks.
During the practice, students mastered methods for identifying plant species, learned how to conduct field observations, collect and systematize data, and carry out research under natural conditions within the urban environment. The practice enabled them to consolidate their theoretical knowledge of Botany and gain valuable experience in independent scientific research.
We hope that the knowledge and skills acquired during the field practice will contribute to the students’ future professional development and foster their further involvement in botanical research, thereby making a meaningful contribution to the advancement of botany.
