Department of "Civilization of the Golden Horde" is founded at ENU

"Civilization of the Golden Horde" Department has been opened at The L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, the first department of such specialization among higher educational institutions in Kazakhstan.

The new department was founded on the initiative of ENU Rector Yerlan Sydykov on the basis of the Faculty of History. Its activities will be aimed at a systematic and comprehensive study of the history, archeology, culture and heritage of the Golden Horde, as well as understanding its role in shaping the statehood and civilizational heritage of the Great Steppe.

As part of the opening of the department, ENU Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Ardak Beisenbai met with the teaching staff. During the meeting, the main directions of scientific and educational activities were identified, prospects for research work, the development of academic projects and the training of specialists in the history and cultural heritage of the Golden Horde were discussed.

Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Maksat Alpysbes, a well-known specialist in the field of medieval history of Kazakhstan and the history of the Golden Horde, is appointed acting head of the department.

The creation of a new department is of particular importance in the context of the country's current scientific and educational priorities. On May 19, 2026, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at the international symposium " The Golden Horde as a Model of Steppe Civilization: History, Archaeology, Culture, and Identity", stressed the need for a systematic and comprehensive study of the heritage of the Golden Horde.

"We are the direct heirs of the Golden Horde," the Head of State noted, emphasizing the importance of further research of the historical heritage of this period.

The opening of the department at ENU will become a platform for consolidating the scientific potential of historians, archaeologists, cultural scientists and other specialists. It is expected that the new academic department will contribute to the development of fundamental research, the implementation of scientific projects and the strengthening of international cooperation in the field of studying the history and civilization of the Golden Horde.
