
Report of the Kazakhstan Geosynthetics Association Approved at the World Geosynthetics Summit in Montreal

Academician of the National Academy of Engineering of the Republic of Kazakhstan, President of the Kazakhstan Geosynthetics Association, and Professor at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Askar Zhussupbekov, took part in the World Summit of Geosynthetics Associations and the Assembly of Geosynthetics Associations, including corporate members of the IGS. The events were held as part of the 13th International Conference on Geosynthetics (13ICG) in Montreal, Canada.
The World Summit brought together 852 specialists from 53 countries. Alongside the business and scientific program, an international exhibition was held, showcasing advanced technologies in the design, testing, and manufacturing of geosynthetic materials.
During the summit, Askar Zhussupbekov presented a report on the activities of the Kazakhstan Geosynthetics Association. The report was reviewed and approved by the participants of the event.
As part of his visit, the ENU professor delivered a lecture at Polytechnique Montréal at the invitation of Professor Pooneh Maghoul. The lecture focused on geotechnical construction of pile foundations for megastructures under the challenging soil conditions of Kazakhstan.
Professor Pooneh Maghoul organized a technical tour of the structural laboratory at Polytechnique Montréal for her Kazakh colleague. During the meeting, the researchers discussed opportunities for doctoral students to undertake research internships at the university’s laboratory, as well as prospects for academic cooperation. In turn, Askar Zhussupbekov presented ENU programs that provide for the participation of international faculty members in the educational process.
Particular attention during the discussions was paid to promising areas of joint research in construction under cold-climate conditions. The researchers also discussed long-term prospects for the development of geotechnical engineering for the future exploration of the Moon and Mars.
The summit program concluded with a technical tour of the port facilities of Montreal and an excursion to the historical landmarks of Old Montreal.
