Master’s student Sultangaliyeva Indira gave an open lesson as part of a teaching practicum

Sultangaliyeva Indira, a second-year Master’s student of the Faculty of International Relations at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, gave an open lesson as part of a teaching practicum, in the format of an interactive seminar on «The EU’s Instruments of Influence in Global Governance: Diplomacy, Law, Economy and Soft Power.» Fourth-year students took part. The aim of the lesson was to analyse the EU’s main instruments of influence in global governance and to assess their effectiveness and limits.
During the lesson, students were divided into four groups, and each group presented, after preparing at home, one EU instrument: diplomacy, law, economics or soft power. All groups then worked on a fictional case, «The Republic of Narvia»: each proposed solutions using its own instrument, countered the other groups’ proposals and together assembled a joint “EU package.” The moderator managed only time and order, and the main activity came from the students.
The lesson discussed the balance between «carrot and stick,» how the instruments complement one another, and the limits of the EU as a «normative power.» Students took an active part and noted in their remarks that global problems are solved not by a single instrument but by a combination of them.
