On 22 October, an open class titled “Astrotourism: A Global Trend, Its Distinctive Features and Potential” was held online via Teams as part of the Tour Operating course.
The session was delivered by Eva Gorenskaya, a master’s student in the 7M11105 Tourism programme (academic supervisor: L.M. Mutaliyeva, Candidate of Economic Sciences, Professor).
Students from the В091-1105-24-02, В091-1105-24-04, В093-1107-24-02 groups attended the lecture.
What did we learn in just one hour? It was an out-of-this-world learning experience:
A growing market: The night tourism market is valued at US$10 billion and is projected to double by 2035.
The appeal of dark skies: More than 80% of the world’s population lives under artificial lighting, making stargazing and digital detox experiences increasingly popular.
Kazakhstan’s and Russia’s potential: We discussed the prospects for the Kamenskoye Plateau and the Assy-Turgen Observatory, as well as unique tours to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, where more than 7,500 tourists have already witnessed rocket launches.
A calendar of celestial events: We are getting ready for solar eclipses and meteor showers (the Perseids and Geminids) in 2026 and 2027, and even flights above the clouds with “Astro Night”!
Now, a question for you:
Would you take an astrotour to the Kazakh steppes or Baikonur? Share your thoughts in the comments!
