On October 21 and 23, 2026, Alem Nurlanuly Imanbek, a Master’s student at the Faculty of International Relations of L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, conducted two open classes as part of his teaching practice on the topic “The Art of Negotiation and Diplomacy: Theory and Practice.”
The aim of the classes was to study negotiation techniques and the fundamentals of diplomacy through practical exercises, as well as to learn the key terms of the diplomatic and consular service and to become familiar with the history of its formation and development. The classes were organized in an interactive format, which allowed students not only to acquire theoretical knowledge but also to apply it in practice, while developing public speaking, argumentation, and teamwork skills.
During the first class, held on October 21, a Model United Nations (MUN) simulation was conducted on the topic “Possible solutions to Iran-US conflict.” Students, divided among participating countries, prepared and presented their states’ positions, delivered official statements, held bilateral and multilateral negotiations, sought allies, and discussed contentious provisions. As a result of lengthy discussions and negotiations, the participants reached a single agreed resolution, which gave them practical experience of consensus-building mechanisms in multilateral diplomacy.
In the second class, held on October 23, students from another group demonstrated their knowledge of the key terms of the diplomatic and consular service and of its history by taking part in two intellectual quizzes on the Kahoot platform. The participants then split into two teams and played the negotiation game “Ugli Oranges,” designed to practice negotiation methods and strategies. Through information exchange, consideration of each party’s interests, and the search for compromise, the teams arrived at a joint decision. Through practical tasks and a discussion of the outcomes, the students consolidated their theoretical knowledge and gained a better understanding of the negotiation process and the role of diplomacy in resolving international conflicts.
