Monthly “Reading Nation” Initiative Held for Hydrology Students

The Department of Physical and Economic Geography at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University holds a monthly literary and educational initiative entitled “Reading Nation.” The initiative is organised by Manira Alagujayeva, PhD, Acting Associate Professor at the Department of Physical and Economic Geography. Third- and fourth-year students of the 6B05210 – Hydrology educational programme participate in the initiative.
The initiative supports the national priorities of promoting reading culture and encouraging young people to engage with literature. Under Presidential Decree No. 1279 of 16 May 2026, the development of reading culture and the formation of a reading nation are recognised as priorities of state policy.
Each month, students select and read a literary work, followed by an open discussion at the end of the month. Participants discuss the plot, analyse the characters' actions, reflect on moral and philosophical questions, share their impressions, and practise expressing their opinions through reasoned arguments.
Each meeting also includes an intellectual competition to recognise the most attentive and thoughtful readers. Winners receive prizes. This approach aims to encourage students to read more actively and develop a deeper understanding of literary works.
The education of future hydrologists should not be limited to professional disciplines alone. Reading literature contributes to the development of critical thinking, broadens students' perspectives, improves communication skills, and strengthens their ability to express and defend their own opinions.
The “Reading Nation” initiative aims to educate not only qualified professionals but also well-rounded, thoughtful individuals with strong intellectual and cultural values.
