Rakhmetulla Sharapidenovich Yerkassov
Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor
Rakhmetulla Sharapidenovich Yerkassov was born on February 24, 1948, in the village of Uspenka, Uspensky District, Pavlodar Region. In 1966–1968, he studied at V.V. Kuibyshev Tomsk State University. In 1971, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Chemistry of S.M. Kirov Kazakh State University.
In 1976, he defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation in Almaty on the topic “Investigation of the Interaction of Inorganic Acids with Benzamide and Acetanilide.” In 1992, he defended his doctoral dissertation at Voronezh State University on the topic “Physicochemical Foundations of the Synthesis and Properties of Compounds of Inorganic Acids with Acetamide Derivatives and Prospects for Their Application.”
Until 1997, his professional career was associated with the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at Kazakh State University. He held the following positions: 1971–1973 – Research Trainee; 1973–1976 – Postgraduate Student; 1976–1978 – Assistant; 1978–1980 – Senior Lecturer; 1980–1992 – Associate Professor; 1992–1994 – Professor; 1994–1997 – Head of the Department.
In 1997, he was invited to L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian University as Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations. In 2001, he was sent by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Sh. Ualikhanov Kokshetau State University as First Vice-Rector, where he worked until 2005.
In 2005–2006, he served as Director (Dean) of the Institute (Faculty) of Natural and Technical Sciences at Eurasian National University. In 2006–2009, he worked as Director of the Regional Research Laboratory Complex and Head of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technology at S. Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University. Since September 2009, he has been a Professor at the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Natural and Technical Sciences of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.
His field of scientific research includes physicochemical analysis of multicomponent systems, coordination chemistry, including the chemistry of spin-crossover transformations in iron(II) complexes with various ligands.
He is a representative of a major scientific school engaged in developing the theoretical foundations for obtaining a new type of salts with complex cations of protonated amides and anilides. Through the work of followers of this scientific school, these compounds have come to be classified as coordination compounds of hydrogen. He has also supervised research devoted to the synthesis and physicochemical investigation of coordination compounds possessing magnetic properties.
Technical specifications for the production of more than 70 amido acids have been included in the IREA register (Moscow) and in the Russian catalogues “Custom-Made Reagents” and “Chemical Reagents and High-Purity Substances.”
Thermochemical data have been included in the database of the Texas Thermochemical Center (USA). Structural data on more than 20 coordination compounds of iron(II) salts possessing magnetic properties have been entered into the Cambridge database.
In recent years, he has led research projects studying the physicochemical properties of supramolecular compounds based on bicyclic bisureas (glycoluril), which are used as precursors for obtaining polymeric compounds and biocomposite materials for medical purposes.
Professor R. Sh. Yerkassov has actively participated in the training of highly qualified specialists. For more than 15 years, he was a member of dissertation councils for the defense of doctoral dissertations at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the Central Scientific Council of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and E.A. Buketov Karaganda State University. He was also a member of the dissertation council for the defense of PhD doctoral dissertations at the Kazakh National Women's Teacher Training University.
Under his scientific supervision, 20 Candidate of Sciences dissertations and 13 PhD doctoral dissertations have been defended. His Hirsch index is 6.
In 2006, he was elected a full member of the Academy of Natural Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan and was awarded the badge “For Merits in the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.”
Sh. Yerkassov is a recipient of the state grant of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Best University Teacher of 2010” and a scholarship for scientists who made an outstanding contribution to the development of science and technology of the Republic of Kazakhstan (2014).
He was awarded the jubilee medal “For Valiant Labor in Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of V.I. Lenin”, as well as the badge “For Merits in the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan” (2007).
He was awarded the jubilee medal “80 Years of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University” in 2015, the “Kultegin” medal in 2016, the “Lev Gumilyov” medal in 2018, and the “25 Years of Eurasian University” medal in 2021.
